The real cost of every day-old chick, followed from feed and egg to sale
The farm raises breeding birds, collects the eggs from its houses every day, sets them in incubators and sells day-old chicks. It needed to know what each hatching egg and each chick really costs, tying feed, medicine, power and wages to the batches that used them, and to follow any batch from arrival on the farm to sale.
What we built
The situation
The cost of a day-old chick builds up over months, across several units: rearing, the laying houses, the eggs, the incubator. Many costs (power, gas, water, wages, vet services) are paid per farm or per unit and must be split between batches, and not all eggs are the same: only hatching eggs go to the incubator.
What we built
An app that follows a batch's path: the storeroom, with goods-received notes and consumption slips, rearing, transfer to the houses with the accumulated cost, daily egg production in five categories, incubation with candling on days 7 and 14 and hatching on day 21, then chick stock and sales. Stock updates itself at every step.
The cost engine splits every expense between batches by the chosen rule (by location, percentage, head × days, eggs produced, incubator capacity and more) and works out the cost per hatching egg, per day-old chick and per head. The audit report shows which costs and rules led to each figure.
The dashboard flags unallocated costs, overdue candling, upcoming hatches and low egg stock. The app has reports for every unit, full traceability for a batch, five roles with per-section permissions and a built-in user manual.
What changed
- Cost per day-old chick and per hatching egg is worked out in the app and can be checked step by step.
- Any batch can be followed from arrival on the farm to sale.
- Egg and chick stock keep themselves up to date.
- Moving birds from rearing to the houses carries the accumulated cost automatically.
- The dashboard flags what needs doing on its own.
